ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book examines the genesis of dualistic models in economics and the connection to the question of income distribution. It deals with the presentation of the decile distribution of income in Kenya and the comparison of the degree of inequality in Kenya to that of other countries. The book explores whether producing for the market, the economic sector of production and the demographics of the household have any effect on the amount of income earned. It looks at income inequality and average incomes in rural districts of Kenya as compared to the urban centres. The book focuses on three sources of inequality, namely land, gender and education. It discusses a discussion of the differences in land and the productivity of land across different kinds of farming systems found in Kenya.
