ABSTRACT

All Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) member states have become food bank nations. Twenty-one national food bank associations are affiliated with the European Federation of Food Banks; Eight belong to the Global Foodbanking Network; and six have food banks in various stages of development. Charitable food banks are markers of domestic hunger with national and international surveys telling us that food poverty is widespread in this rich world members' club. In 2014, the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) State of Food Insecurity in the World report found 15 million people living in developed regions to be experiencing 'undernourishment'. The Food Insecurity Experience Scale, being developed by the Voices of Hunger project under the aegis of the FAO, is a step towards developing a standard measure for estimating comparable prevalence rates of food insecurity experienced by individuals or households in more than 140 countries.
