Coping with business crisis in the Russian North: Strategies against turmoil

One of the traditional debates of relevance in explaining Russian socioeconomic development is the relationship between structure and agency. That debate can be referred to as the discussion of the nature of human geography (Thrift, 1983). In its simplest, development is an interplay between human agency and economic structures (Figure 19.1). From the view of an empirical standpoint, development is an interplay of actors and institutions.
