ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors start by justifying their choice of research method and describe the research strategy followed by a presentation of the case study organization. They follow social constructionist conventions, gathering ‘rich’ information and perceptions about people through inductive, qualitative analysis based on discussions, participant observations, unstructured interviews, and document analysis. Building theories from case studies is a research strategy that involves using one or more cases to create theoretical constructs, propositions and theory from case-based, empirical evidence. The Wool Yarn Manufacturer (WYM) was perceived to be a typical or representative case of a small and innovative company, which was studied longitudinally. The general approach of WYM towards staff is training to use best business practices, focus around health and safety, and improve quality and product knowledge. Product development at WYM plays an important role on future sales, maintains business cash flow and market position.
