ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the spirit of Paulo Freire and Antonia Darder, as a letter to those whom dare serve. At the same time, it is an important offering of hope, humility, and faith, in that it is not unusual for many to decide that the way to enter into a decolonizing process is to simply do away with all that is in place. To those whom dare serve, it is important to recognize that service learning has not rid society of its social ills and problems, it renders them invisible and rather, under the cloak of service, represents the institutionalization of social struggles. To counter the banking pedagogy of cultural invasion, which is at the same time a pedagogy of colonization, requires a commitment to creating the conditions for students to critically examine their worlds. This is not an indoctrination process. It is an emancipatory process that values the learner, teacher, and bicultural communities that are impacted by this process.
