ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the process of economic development and its importance to the global economy, notably with regard to facilitating proactive engagement by developing economies within the global system. To this end, the chapter explores the notion of economic development and looks at alternative theories that can explain the pattern and process of economic development. In doing so, the chapter also examines the major impediments to economic growth and development.
