ABSTRACT
Emerging economies are a very diverse collection of states. For this reason, this chapter focuses on just India and China. In so doing, the chapter compares the divergent patterns of development between these two states over the past four decades. The chapter seeks to explore why China has ‘taken off’ in terms of economic growth and development while also exploring the circumstances that have led to India falling behind its emerging rival.
