ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the last of the three essentials: Leadership. Leadership is critical to the successful completion of any project, and this especially applies to business process management (BPM) activities, as they often require significant change, both structurally and in a sustainable way, in the organization. The chapter describes the different leadership levels that can be found in an organization, and the various leadership styles and their influence on BPM activities. The leadership levels can have varying degrees of influence over a BPM project, the organization, people and their environment. Some BPM initiatives need a Servant Leadership approach as it aims to build people and institutional capability to ensure that the changes are structural, significant and sustainable. Some leaders create an overload and confusion on purpose, because they realize that from confusion emerges order and new and interesting ideas and possibilities that would rarely come from any other activity.
