ABSTRACT

The two major trends for the accessing of Internet resources were identified by Dodd (1996) as (i) search engines that look for matches on keywords and (ii) the subject-oriented, hierarchical, classification system. ‘The explosion of the use of the Internet, particularly via the World Wide Web, has given rise to an interesting phenomenon: the proliferation of semi-professional attempts to give some subject-based access to Internet resources via hierarchical guides .. . such as Yahoo.’2
