ABSTRACT

This essay was first published as a review of Fear God and Dread Nought. The Correspondence of Admiral of the Fleet Lord Fisher of Kilverstone. Vol. 2: The Years of Power 1904-1914, edited by Arthur Marder (London, Cape, 1956). John Arbuthnot Fisher (1841-1920) joined the Royal Navy in 1854. He was instrumental in bringing about major naval reform from 1902. He was First Sea Lord from 1904 until 1910 and was created Baron Fisher of Kilverstone in 1908. After the resignation of Prince Louis of Battenberg in October 1914, Fisher returned as First Sea Lord and served until spring 1915, when he resigned because of his dissatisfaction with the government's continued support for naval involvement at Gallipoli. He did hear shots fired in anger during the bombardment of Alexandria, July 1882.
