ABSTRACT
This essay was first published as a review of Documents on German Foreign Policy 1918-1945, Series D, Vol. 7: The Last Days of Peace, August 9-September 3, 1939 (London, HMSO, 1957), in the Manchester Guardian (19 February 1957). In this essay Alan Taylor firmly states that 'the date for the outbreak of war (with Poland) had already been fixed', with Hitler 'relentlessly set on war with Poland'.
