This essay was published as a review of L.B. Namier, Europe in Decay: A Study in Disintegration, 1936-40 (London, Macmillan, 1950), in the Manchester Guardian (7 March 1950). It is unlikely that Lewis Namier would have received well the final paragraph, not least as Alan Taylor's own collection of essays included reviews of such memoirs and volumes of documents.
