ABSTRACT

The controversy about the economic calculation in socialism influenced the way Friedrich von Hayek understood the economic problem and the subject of economics. In the first article of the series Socialist Calculation he pointed out that an economic problem such as the allocation of available resources into various applications, is never consciously solved in the capitalism economy. Hayek treats socialism, central planning and state interventionism as symptoms of an incorrect, constructivist attitude, manifested by attempts to shape social organization authoritatively. When in 1989, a new direction of changes in political system was settled, Hayek was also referred to in the search for answers to the question of the best way to build the market economy. Critics of the idea of introducing 'pure' market economy in Poland, formulated a general conclusion, that Hayek's evolutionary vision shows that fast, radical transformation of the system is impossible. Hayek's concept of rationalistic constructivism became a tool for criticizing the stabilization programme called 'Balcerowicz's Plan'.
