ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book shows that the Port Hamilton Affair played a not-insignificant part in the development of political relationships within East Asia and between East Asia and the West. The Port Hamilton Affair was another relevant incident, but it might be thought, perhaps even without needing the benefit of hindsight, that the Manchester Guardian's correspondent was having an 'end of history' moment in stating that its conclusion had made Korea 'safe'. Perhaps Korea might have become non-aligned; instead it became the focus of this three-power struggle for East Asian supremacy. However, the dead are remembered on a memorial slab dating from 1998, which records their names, rank and ship, or, in the case of the unfortunate Private Ward, James Hoare affiliation to the Royal Marines Detachment Port Hamilton.
