ABSTRACT

The child is treated paternalistically with adult independence in view and with the goal of making the best use of that independence. Neither society as a whole nor any responsible adult believes in complete freedom in the educational process, expressly ruling out of the lives of young children pornography, blasphemy, the advocacy of violence of an antisocial kind, and the explicit teaching of antisocial behaviour generally. Society attempts to inculcate opinions and attitudes into its future adult members for social purposes. Probably many people, including those in authority, believe that the age of adulthood represents the stage at which a satisfactory state of opinions and attitudes has been reached in most people through a proper upbringing. If freedom of speech is an absolute right, it is a right for all people; and it could be based not on any kind of moderate individualistic theory but only on an extreme individualism.
