ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses the highly dynamic mechatronics cluster in the greater Eindhoven region. It describes strategic relations between various actors in the cluster and to put the cluster into the perspective of the general economic structure of the region. The chapter assesses how organising capacity can be enhanced to further the development of the cluster. It explores general profile of the greater Eindhoven region is sketched, as well as the economic development and structure of the region. The chapter describes the most important actors and their activities in the Eindhoven mechatronic cluster. The mechatronics refers to the combination of precision mechanical engineering, electronic control and systems-thinking in the design of products and manufacturing processes. The organising capacity in the region –vision, leadership, public private networks on several levels and political support – is one of the main 'silent engines' behind the prospering of the mechatronic cluster in Eindhoven.
