ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the concept of social impacts, assessment methods and social return on investment. An overview of the existing global and regional networks of social entrepreneurs as well as existing certification systems is provided. A first option to identify social entrepreneurs is to scan for holders of certificates or assessments, which is the most logical form of identification. A second option for identification is the affiliation with national or international networks and organisations, which also implies having a common denominator imposed by those bodies. A third, and by far less objective method for the identification of social entrepreneurs, is to take into consideration individual initiatives recognised as being of social value by the market. There are various types and forms of social entrepreneurs and enterprises that could be operating in the highly diverse field of hospitality and tourism.
