ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with a discussion on the ethical issues facing the hospitality industry and expands on the concept of sustainable tourism. It explores the impacts of tourism on climate change and biodiversity collapse, with a focus on identifying opportunities in environmental entrepreneurship, and discusses best practices in that field. The hotel and tourism industries are significant contributors to environmental degradation and pollution. Local people at tourist destinations generally perceive that they have little or no share in the economic benefits of the hospitality business in proportion to their effort, while bearing – a disproportionate burden from the environmental degradation caused by its activities. A possible way to reverse such inconsistency is not only to educate and raise awareness of the negative consequences of bad behaviours on the environment, but also to prove the positive effects that conscious, consistent actions could have on the environment.
