ABSTRACT

One of the most persistent problems with IT over the last forty years has been the apparent disconnect between it and the rest of the business community. This culture gap, so called because IT appears to operate on a different agenda to the rest of the business, continues to cause major problems in all but the smallest of development projects. Although organizations have attempted to resolve the problem, it still remains, and suggests they have approached it from a position of limited understanding. Therefore, before organizations can comprehensively tackle the problem of the IT-business disconnect they must understand:

1. why it exists 2. how it is manifested 3. where it is manifested 4. what has been done to resolve it, and

whether these attempts have been as successful as hoped.
