ABSTRACT

The conjunctive ~는 /(으)ㄴ데 is used to attract the listener’s attention by providing background information for the main clause (or second clause). It can be translated as “and,” “so,” and “but” depending on context. Consider the following example:

지금 드라마 1회를 보고 있는데 이미 재미있어요.

“Right now, (I) am watching the first episode, and (it) is already interesting.”

In this example, the first clause 드라마 1회를 보고 있다 “(I) am watching the first episode of the drama” is the background information for the main clause 재미있다 “(it) is interesting.”
