ABSTRACT
~(으)ㄹ걸 is a two-form ending, and it is built on ~(으)ㄹ 거 and the particle 을/를. This form is used to indicate two things depending on the subject of the sentence. First, if the subject is the first person, it is used to express a sense of regret, as shown in the following examples:
비빔밥이 맛있어 보이네요. 참, 나도 그거 시킬걸.
“The bibimbap looks so delicious. Well, (I) also should have ordered that.”
미안해요. 진작 연락할걸.
“I am sorry. (I) should have contacted (you) earlier.”
If the subject is not the first person, it can indicate a sense of conjecture.지금쯤 서울에 도착했을걸.
“(I guess that he) arrived in Seoul by now.”
한국 사람일걸요.
“(I guess that he) is Korean.”
