ABSTRACT
The first set of feminist dilemmas crystallizes around the politics of gender. The Public Service Union (UNISON) group is quite unique in terms of its allegiance to feminism, its efforts to extirpate gay male sexism and its deliberate creation of structures and strategies to promote gender equity and even gender therapy. The gay male camp and the lesbian feminist camp have traditionally shared only one principle, and it is one which has ironically kept them more divided from each other than from heterosexual people. Bisexual and transgendered members of UNISON are protected by the overarching anti-discriminatory policy of the union but they are only eligible to join the lesbian and gay group if they self-define specifically as lesbian or gay. It is scarcely surprising that large sections of the lesbian-and-gay movement are tempted to take refuge in a lesbian-and-gay-only movement.
