ABSTRACT

Plinian astronomy in the middle ages and renaissance is a subject as much in need of definition as it is in need of either exploration or synthesis. What I propose to offer here is a working hypothesis which may become a suitable definition of the core of Plinian astronomy in medieval and renaissance times when further study has been done. Guided by my hypothesis, I hope to show the varying historical vitality of Plinian astronomy. However, I have no intention of suggesting any final synthesis.
