ABSTRACT

Many scientists, especially younger ones, use social media both to become informed about scientific advances in their field of interests, and also more generally to interact with other scientists with similar interests to their own. The internet enabled the development of databases such as the Web of Science and Google Scholar, which not only contain the majority of the published scientific literature, but allow that literature to be searched in different ways, such as by subject or author. The development of the internet has led to a wide range of platforms being established that enable people, including scientists young and old, to interact with each other, to get to know one another, to promote themselves and their research, to keep up with developments in their field of interest, and to learn about job opportunities. A few scientists do use Facebook for science, but most people use it to talk to their friends.
