ABSTRACT

Good science starts with that spark of curiosity, the 'I wonder why' question. This curiosity is what clearly distinguishes the first great scientists in human history. If scientists persist and continue to produce good outputs, science is likely to provide steady employment. In industry there are increasing possibilities to be very well rewarded, particularly where science innovation is a key part of the business. Imagination is as valued in science as in art, where scientists have the confidence of thinking, dreaming and trying something different. There are two important aspects to learning and character. The first is about having confidence and the second about avoiding arrogance. The second aspect is avoiding arrogance. Persistence and meticulousness are typical components of working hard. The ability to work to a high standard to meet a tight deadline can mean having to work long and sometimes unsocial hours.
