ABSTRACT

This chapter considers how scientists might decide which project and supervisor to choose, as well as how to decide what they should do next and how to develop scientists’ science project once they have it. When scientists start out on their career they will have very little experience on which to judge either potential supervisors or the research topics on offer. To enquire further into both the research project value and the quality of the supervisor/research manager, the modern scientist is blessed with the many resources of the internet. The ideal moment for a young scientist to get on board is when a subject area is ‘taking off’. Most scientists begin their research to tackle an issue or question that another, senior, scientist considers worthwhile or important. Advances in science are rarely the result of inventing something new which has never before been seen by mankind.
