ABSTRACT

This concluding chapter draws on lessons found as early as in Plato’s Republic concerning history, memory, and “prudent wisdom” as “recollection,” concluding that the social and behavioral sciences emphasis on technical training, strict obedience, and bureaucratic efficiency will no longer suffice as preparation for fighting a nation’s wars. Rather, I describe the need for a broad liberal education and cultural literacy on the part of today’s combat personnel, sufficient to equip them to fight the unusual, protracted, and demanding kinds of conflict they will face in the future.
