ABSTRACT

The development of resilience can start at any time for any reason. Some people assume that their resilience skills will transfer automatically from one situation to another, and feel troubled when they discover this is not the case. Most people do display resilient behaviour in their lives, but some people may not be aware of this. They may not consider themselves resilient without having experienced or survived a terrible event themselves, or they may only have a vague idea of what resilience is. Strengths can be found in the daily activities one undertake yet probably dismiss as 'just getting on with it' and do not see as evidence of resilience in action. There is a form of personal risk management that helps one to focus on whether their present skills and attitudes will be sufficient to deal with a future unpleasant event.
