ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the writings and experiences of others outside of CBT who provide a rich source of ideas to widen and deepen the discussion of coping with adversity. Problem solving is carried on at both conscious and non-conscious levels. Psychological workouts do not have to focus exclusively on one's problem areas: other challenges could be learning a foreign language, training for a marathon, mentoring individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds or undertaking voluntary work at home and/or abroad. Look in the media for stories of how people overcame adversity. More generally, one's diary can include anything that you find helpful or instructive. A resilient approach to dealing with a setback is to accept its occurrence and tackle it as promptly as possible. Teaching or talking to others about resilience is a good way of deepening people understanding of it.
