ABSTRACT

Human beings are sensitive creatures. The development of refined emotions is supported by two complementary abilities of human kindness: trust and accommodation. This is why trust and accommodation can flourish on the island of Endoxa, where one need to do their humaning without access to expert advice. Trust starts with entrusting, leaving a task to somebody else. Sometimes entrusting takes place in an explicit manner. Entrusting, you think, becomes trusting: an adult way of dealing with each other. Two complementary aspects meet in this, such as reliability and vulnerability. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, people have developed a true passion for determining other people's reliability. It is hardly surprising that society is such an emotional shambles nowadays, as all this sensible expertise is based on denying our vulnerability, on ignoring our emotions. A person who understands that people need trust to be able to do their humaning, and that in order to be successful, trust requires accommodation.
