ABSTRACT
For over a decade, suicide rates in rural areas have surpassed urban rates. This chapter looks at the prevalence, causes, and risk factors inherent in suicide, the populations most at risk, and provides shocking statistics regarding suicide in America and its cost to our society. It investigates risk factors, prevention strategies, and treatment options, and concludes with a case study rooted in small town life.
