ABSTRACT
The rural economy is in constant transition out of necessity. Rural areas have always had to keep redefining themselves. This chapter surveys the history of America’s rural economy and the mental health toll this all takes on individuals, families, and the community. It also looks at the economic side of the farm crisis, the effect of changes in agricultural technology, and suggestions to consider for the future of rural economies.
