ABSTRACT

There are many different types of mental health practitioners, each with their own scope of practice. This chapter explores each level in the mental health care system, their training level, and reasons for selection, and presents some ideas for future additions to the system as well as ways practitioners of different kinds can collaborate for the benefit of individuals and communities. They include psychiatrists; psychologists; psychiatric nurse practitioners; licensed mental health counselors; licensed marriage and family therapists; licensed social workers; mobile crisis teams; crisis/respite workers; art therapists; dance, drama, music, and other creative arts therapists; and peer advocates and other mental health professionals.
