      ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the Turkic Republics to the Turkish Model and to Turkey. It outlines the collapse of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and the emergence of the Turkic Republics. The chapter analyses the statements made by the Presidents of the Turkic Republics, the initial reactions of each Republic to the Turkish Model and to Turkey. It discusses possible factors which caused the Turkic Republics to decline the Turkish Model. The role of Russia in the cultural values of the Turkic Republics of Central Asia is important as well. In the positive reaction of Azerbaijan to Turkey and the Turkish Model, cultural ties and ethnicity played an important role more so than the other Turkic Republics. Six out of fifteen newly independent Republics of the ex Soviet Union were Muslim in belief and five of these were also Turkic in origin, namely Azerbaijan, Kazakstan, Kirgizstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. They were referred to as the Turkic Republics especially in Turkey.
