ABSTRACT

Chapel of the Planets motion.1 Aristotelian transformations of physical bodies had their origin in the stars. The stars were the prime movers, the source of growth and change and dissolution. The fixed stars were the rulers of permanence and growth, while the wide-circling planets were the dispensers of change and fitfulness. Both principles are found projected at a tension in Quattro Cento stone. In Quattro Cento architecture and sculpture I see the vivid stone as an immediate and universal solidity into the spatial terms of which is transmuted a fierce compulsive motion.
