ABSTRACT

Limestone's glow is not the result of transparency but of slight translucency or luminosity. Marble, more compact than limestone, is, on occasion, slightly transparent. Yet neither the comparative opaqueness of limestone, nor the reflective polish and transparency of dressed marble, overpower the other quality they have in common, the glow that is the opposite of the hard or glassy light of granite. Such soft and, in whitish stones, slightly roseate, radiance, evenly distributed, is due, we have said, to a fine granular structure that rocks which are conglomerates of the harder quartz in particular
