ABSTRACT

This chapter maintains that International Relations must extend beyond the dual image of us and them in the interest of human security. It discounts order based upon spatial closure and preponderant monolithic identity, and rather develops new spatial and identity configurations. The development of human solidarity, based upon a fusion between Innenwelt and Umwelt, is necessary in order to create human security. The chapter outlines the theoretical approach which aims to construct human solidarity between peoples. The myriad of identities within society would articulate sovereignty. The theoretical approach promotes solidarity based upon duty and obligation, rather than basing solidarity upon feudal criteria, such as kinship bonds, hierarchical obligation, or upon modern criteria, such as the nation state, ethnicity or religion. Human security as an analytical tool puts much less emphasis upon the suppression of identity and rather emphasises the liberation of identities.
