ABSTRACT
Heidegger (p93) uses the term 'world' to signify the realm, or the domain, in which people live. In the case of my student participants, 'world' refers to the environment and contexts within which they encounter the everydayness of nursing. Heidegger makes explicit the relationship between the phenomenon of 'world' and the sense that individuals assign to experience. Indeed, the importance of context to experience cannot be underestimated using an ontologico-existential approach. Using hermeneutic phenomenology, experience and 'world' should not be separated. It follows therefore, that I have an obligation to the reader to set the scene for this study and to show how the students' 'world' might have influenced their development.
