ABSTRACT

Heidegger (p58), writes about different types of 'being-with'. As individuals, we can be 'for or against' another, 'with or without' another, 'passing one another', 'matter' to one another. We can show interest in one another, consideration for one another, we can empathise with one another and relate to one another. All these types of being-with involve some kind of concern for one another. Even if we do not relate, empathise or show interest in one another, we are still, by negation, not showing concern for, or they are not mattering to us. However, just because we are there, does not mean that we are 'with' others. This implies that physical presence alone is not a sufficient condition for being-with.
