ABSTRACT

Though the use of mood- and mind-altering substances is ancient, the treatment of substance use disorder is a relatively modern phenomenon. This chapter provides a brief overview of the history of treatment in the United States as well as an examination of current treatment models. Beginning with a discussion of the definition of addiction, the chapter reviews the ongoing efforts of individuals to address this issue in the United States. The reader will discover the long-standing nature of treatment programs as well as the various approaches to treatment that have been implemented.
