ABSTRACT

It is impossible to speak about the efforts to address alcoholism and drug addiction without understanding the impact of Alcoholics Anonymous. Though this topic fits into the historical overview presented in the previous chapter, the influence of AA and the 12-step movement is so significant that it requires a chapter of its own. This chapter presents the history of Alcoholics Anonymous beginning with the experience of Rowland Hazard and his analysis with Dr. Carl Jung. The reader is introduced not only to the narrative of the co-founders of AA, Bill W. and Dr. Bob, but also to the evolution of the program from its formative years to its current inception.
