ABSTRACT

This chapter elaborates on urban attractiveness in a broader sense. It points out that urban attractiveness can be defined as the degree to which welfare elements can be accessed by population, companies and visitors. The chapter illustrates in more detail how information and communications technologies (ICT) solutions can improve the accessibility of welfare elements with examples from several European cities. It considers how ICT can improve the internal accessibility of an urban region transportation and contribute to the quality of public services. The chapter discusses the importance of Internet access for the entire population and shows that how European cities deal with that challenge. It shows the technological opportunities and discusses organisational issues, illustrated by examples from European cities. ICT offers possibilities not only for improving information provision to travellers, but also improving the connection of different types of public transport.
