ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the predicament of prejudice on women in the public service in Nigeria and the struggle to integration women into political leadership and economic development in Nigeria. It argues that the public sector of Nigeria need to introduce diversity management programs as a policy that should be adopted by the national, state and local governments. The chapter also argues that in offering women the opportunity to access economic resources as well as to disentangle their identities from those of their families women will contribute immensely in the sustainable development process in the nation. It presents some theoretical perspectives of the role of women's role in the development process of a nation. The history of women in Nigeria's public bureaucracy presents an account of tremendous diversity in the civil service. The public personnel management function in Nigeria's public service includes procedures for the establishment of posts, and selection, recruitment and subsequent treatment of persons filling those posts.
