ABSTRACT

Chandpur Village lies in the district of Varanasi, which is the home of the ancient and holy city of Banares, known in ancient literature as Kashi, venerated and inhabited by the Hindus, Muslims, Jains, and the Buddhists alike. The principal sources of employment and occupation of people in Varanasi are agriculture, medium and small-scale industries, diesel locomotive works of the Indian railways and a spattering of heavy industries such as the Bharat Heavy Electricals, agro-processing units and agro-based industries. Since almost every segment of the population take up agriculture as a primary occupation or a secondary occupation or work as agricultural labourers, agriculture forms a very important element in the mosaic of alternative means of livelihood pursued in Chandpur village. Farming community in Chandpur consider vegetable cultivation as part of agriculture. In matters of health, the villagers seek the help of private practitioners both in the village and outside the village, including in Varanasi.
