ABSTRACT
Stages are specific time periods during which work on the project takes place: information is collected, outputs created and outcomes recognized. Gates are the decision points preceding every stage. Unless specific criteria have been met, as evidenced by certain approved deliverables or verifiable outcomes, the subsequent stage should not be started. Gates have traditionally been looked at as endpoints to the preceding stage. The proposal outlines the business need the project will meet, the desired outcomes what it is intended to produce (if known), its benefits and how it fits with current strategy. The goal of the initial investigation stage is for the project manager and team to examine the proposal as quickly as possible, identifying possible solutions and approaches. The initial business case contains the business rationale for the project. The post implementation review report assesses the success of the project against predefined conditions of satisfaction given in the business.
