For a business portfolio, the list of projects needs to be extended to become a list of business portfolio components, i.e., programmes, projects and other work. To keep track of one's projects and other work within a business portfolio, they will need a definitive list of the requests for new proposals and the work currently in progress. There is a need for a central database which holds the data on each business portfolio, individual projects and items of other work. If implementing full business portfolio management, the system(s) should contain all work being undertaken in the organization. It must be possible to enquire: A simple list of projects and work and those which it depends on might be sufficient but if the data is to be used as a decision support tool to enable business portfolios and the business impacts seen, more detail is necessary.
