ABSTRACT

The finalization of this book’s manuscript has coincided with a proverbial “black swan”—an unforeseen event with extreme consequences—for educational systems around the globe. With the World Health Organization (WHO) designating the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak as a pandemic in March 2020, postsecondary institutions worldwide were forced to hastily render their physical campuses off-limits and—where even possible—to move all face-to-face (F2F) instruction to online delivery in a desperate attempt to help slow the disease’s exponential spread. Within the United States, the University of Washington took the lead—canceling all in-person classes effective March 6, 2020—with other colleges and universities across the country rapidly following suit. During the subsequent weeks, postsecondary institutions and K–12 schools in nearly every country in the world closed temporarily, with a majority mandating that classes continue to meet through online technologies.
