ABSTRACT

This chapter examines living history museums through exploration of the three sites that form Virginia's "Historic Triangle": Colonial Williamsburg, Yorktown, and Jamestown. Colonial Williamsburg is the site of a living history museum housed in Virginia's colonial capital and set at the time of the American Revolution. Yorktown, the site of the final major battle of the American Revolution, is home to a National Historic Battlefield, which is run by the National Park Service, and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, a living history museum centered on the time of the battle. Two sites are also located at Jamestown. They include Historic Jamestowne, the actual site of the first English permanent settlement, run by a partnership of the Park Service and Preservation Virginia, and Jamestown Settlement, a living history exhibition and museum located nearby. For teachers, there are several features of living history museums to consider when planning visits with students, or even in selecting living history museums to visit.
