ABSTRACT

Research takes on a very different form and feel in different fields, from mathematics, through physics, chemistry, biology, and psychology, to linguistics, sociology, economics, art, jurisprudence, ethics and theology. This chapter suggests that most such fields focus on single core aspects and fleshes this out with the notion of three-part Ground-Idea. There are also fields that are interested in more than one aspect, especially interdisciplinary fields. In addition to fields as such, the chapter is also about how researchers can grasp what is going on in their fields and what broad contributions can and should be made. It discusses understanding the core of the field, understanding paradigms, and clarifying problematic concepts and ideas. Dooyeweerd’s notion of diverse meaningfulness and aspects has proven important. In this way a number of conundrums that trouble research might be resolved.
