ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book argues that Gender Quality Action Learning (GQAL) provides a strong example of a tried and tested methodology that facilitates locally led problem-solving, learning and adaptation in the context of work to address root causes of gender inequality. It describes the origins of the GQAL process inside BRAC, the baseline study the GQAL Team undertook, and the process of designing and building agreement on the intervention. It also describes two distinct phases of GQAL: the programme for BRAC staff; and the programme to implement GQAL in local communities. The book also explores the implications of learning from the GQAL Programme for the future, both for BRAC and for other organizations interested in promoting gender equality and social inclusion. It situates GQAL's approach and impact within the context of current literature and debates on gender mainstreaming, organizational change and gender-sensitive evaluation.
